Obituary For Catherine C Alfano

Catherine C. (Boland) Alfano, 99, of Bristol, entered her eternal life on the morning of Friday, January 13, 2023. Best known to her family and friends as "Kit", she was a daughter of the late Joseph P. Boland and Laura (Reagan) Boland. She was born in Central Falls, RI on March 27, 1923. She was the wife of the late Louis P. Alfano, Jr., a former RI Chief of Veterans Affairs and former Commandant of the RI Veterans Home. They had been married for 65 years until his passing in 2014.

As a young Irish bride married into an Italian family, Kit took it upon herself to learn from Bianca, her mother-in-law, the many finer points of Italian cooking. During her time-honored Sunday dinners, family would comment on how everything was so delicious. Kit's modest response was always, "Give me an 'A' for effort". She loved spending time with family and a Bristol Fourth of July celebration was never complete without a cookout at Aunt Kit and Uncle Lou's backyard. A big heart assured grandchildren that she would be a major part of their lives, from before and after school babysitting (treats included) to running errands, to playtime and reading; Kit was always there for them. Over the years, Kit adopted many canine companions including Sarg, Bridgette, Tina, Tiffany, and Biondi. They were all truly loved and treated as members of the family and household.

Kit is survived by her son Joseph P. Alfano and his wife Margot of San Diego, CA; and her daughter, Colleen Ann Marshall and her husband Manny of Bristol. Additionally, she has three beloved grandchildren, Barbara C. Alfano Zackowski (Greg); David M. Marshall (Carrie Ann); Peter J. Alfano (Mary-Jo); and five wonderful great-grandchildren, David M. Marshall, Jr., Sarah Elizabeth Marshall, Emma Grace Zackowski, Asa Joseph Valentino Alfano, and Mira Lucy Valentino Alfano. She has many surviving nephews and nieces from the Boland and Alfano families.

In addition to her husband and parents, Kit was predeceased by her sisters Mary Ellen Quinn and Helen Turenne, her brother Edward Boland, and her beloved Aunt Kate. Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI. Relatives and friends are invited to meet at St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood Street Bristol, RI on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 am for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. For Directions or tributes, please visit www.wjsmithfh.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to do so, please donate in Kit's memory to the Bristol Animal Shelter at 10 Minturn Farm Road, Bristol, RI 02809. That would have made her happy!

You are very fortunate to have had your mom for the long Coleen, I let my mom at 17 yrs old. Losing a mom is so hard for she is the one who was the when you took your first breath and held you in her arms so lovingly to welcome you into this world, I hope you had the opportunity to be with her when she took her last. Be at peace with her passing for she is in a much better place now than this world could ever be now. God bless you all. Love always.
