Obituary For David Tupaj

David James Tupaj, beloved son of David and Alice Tupaj, passed away February 21, 2014 at Kent County Hospital, Warwick, RI. In addition to his parents, David is survived by the love of his life, his son, Nicholas of Barrington, RI and his siblings and their spouses, whom he admired greatly, Gregory (Lori), of San Diego, CA and Sandra (Tom) Lozeau of Putnam, CT. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins that loved him dearly. David was the grandson of the late Maurice and Adela Landry and Stanley and Mildred Tupaj. A lifelong resident of Warren, RI, David was born March 23, 1962. Despite a lifelong struggle with Schizophrenia and drug addiction, David had many virtues for which he will be remembered. A deep and abiding faith in God enabled him to possess a love of life and a tender, compassionate spirit. Quick to praise, kind to everyone, and generous in heart, David never judged anyone. He cherished his freedom and was content with his lot in life. The family owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Riverwood Mental Health Services in Warren and the wonderful caring staff there. David was loved, cared for and nurtured by the entire staff, especially Jack over many years. They accepted David for who he was and brought out the best in him. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the shelter in which he had recently been staying, Harrington Hall in Cranston, RI. The staff provided a home for David where he felt liked and was comfortable. Finally, the family is grateful for the countless acts of kindness shown to David by the community, from Bristol to Warwick, throughout his life, and the many soup kitchens which kept him well fed. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, February 26, at Smith Funeral Home, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 27, at Smith Funeral Home followed by a mass of Christian burial at St. Jean the Baptiste 324 Main Street, Warren, RI, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverwood Mental Health Services, P.O. Box 226, Warren, RI 02885. To leave online condolences for the family, please visit www.wjsmithfh.com.

To the Tupaj family, My most heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Though I didn't know David very well due to our age difference, our families where very close while living as neighbors on Barney St. I remember the many picnics at Colt Park, gliding on the best glider in the town of Warren at your house and playing in your yard. I have fond memories and have sorrow for your loss. Know that David is now comforted in the arms of his past loved ones.

Alice & David - I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your son. While he had some difficult times during his life, his love for family was always evident, and your love and support for him, and others who live with serious and persistent mental illness, was unwavering. That is what family is all about. My thoughts are with you and your grandson - take care.

Dear Alice & David, I am so sorry to hear of your son David's passing. I really did not know him until recently when he came into the animal shelter to bring in a cat that he had named Rosie. He said he could not take care of her any more and he wanted us to find her a new home. While Rosie was at the shelter David came in to visit her every day until we found her that new home. He said that when he was a kid there was always a cat in the house. I was so happy to have known him for the short time that I did.

Though I never knew Dave's Name until I saw his notice in the paper. I saw hime many many times over the years on Hope street. He always had somthing nice to say and never seemed to have a bad day. I remember one time I pulled up to a store and was finishing an argument on my cell phone. I get out of my car and slam the door. I look up and there is Dave. He looked at me in his kind way and simply said "conversations move mountains yelling gets you no where" My deepest sympathy to Daves family. I will miss seeing him on Hope street.
