Gavin was born on September 30, 1988 in Norfolk, VA and was raised in Warren, RI before moving to North Providence three years ago. He has always loved people. As a young student he represented Warren and Rhode Island as a Student Ambassador and was given the opportunity to travel to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Even then, he shared many funny stories. This was one of the many good traits he held on to until the end of his life. He has many enduring friendships from coast to coast and in China. He had recently been employed by Madison Financial and was previously employed by Lima Law and Silk Title. Gavin was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the Providence College Friars, where he held season tickets, as well as the University of Arizona Wildcats. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his loving parents, Carolyn and John, Gavin is survived by his brother, Russell Lee and his wife Valerie of Gettysburg, PA; his uncle, Thomas O’Brien of Warren; his aunts, Audrey O’Brien of Warren, Lynne Russell of Chambersburg, PA, Sandee Hoover of Conowingo, MD; Sage, his beloved Golden Retriever; his cousins, Kerry O’Brien, Eric O’Brien, David Morrissette, Joel Morrissette and many others; and his dear friend, Rev. Richard Dannenfelser. He was the grandson of the late John and Therese (Cote) O’Brien. Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. First, I wanted to extend my condolences to Gavin's family and everyone that loved him. It's hard for everyone that knew him well, but in certain ways, that's a good thing, because it wouldn't be hard if it wasn't for good memories. I have quite a few with Gavin, and I was thinking about one in particular that really sticks out. Gavin and I had kind of a late-night, weekend ritual that we liked to do together when we had the chance. We would go for a drive, probably listen to an album, exchange our favorite hip-hop tracks; Gavin usually shared the best picks as he was the one who gave me an appreciation for the genre. We also listened to a lot of talk radio together, and he's still one of the only people I've found who'd be open-minded and interested enough in doing that. We would discuss whatever the topic was, share our thoughts and opinions, and laugh a lot in between. At some point on our drive we would stop at Cumby's and buy all of the newspapers; The Times, The Globe, The Journal, all fresh off the presses. Then we'd drive to the IHOP in Middletown, which was open all night. We'd get a table, a pot of coffee, some pancakes of course, and read that morning's news together. We'd trade papers and read out headlines, and gave our commentary. We shared more of our our thoughts and opinions, and laughed some more. We sat there over pancakes like we were already two old men, meeting up for breakfast way too early, and it was fun; something that simple was good enough to make for a great night. I think everyone has only a small handful of people whom they can do that with, just sitting and talking, and having a good time doing just that. I also think everyone has an even smaller handful of times, simple times like that, which become memories you can easily recall for years. I think that says a lot about Gavin; the person he was, the impact he had, and how memorable he is. It's a memory that comes to my mind whenever I think of good times with a great friend, and I know it's something I won't forget. I still sit out on my porch at night with a cup of coffee and listen to talk radio, and although that might have been something I got him into, I'm positive he had something to do with why I continue the tradition. I'll turn it up so you can hear it, bro. Rest easy, Gav. Much love, Goods

I met Gavin at University of Arizona and from day one we bonded over our love for sports and hip hop, specifically NAS. Gavin was the one who got me into tennis, which I will forever watch in his memory. (King Kyrgios will win the US Open for you). I will never forget the laughs Gavin gave everyone who was lucky enough to have crossed his path. To say Gavin will be missed is an understatement as he was someone I talked to everyday. He was a brother to me. Although we lived on different coasts I knew he was always a call away. Gavin was the embodiment of what a friend really is. I sit here missing you daily looking up knowing you are just prepping everything for when we meet again. I will always remember our times together and will always look at you as one of my best friends. I love you man! Rest In Peace. -Derek Moore

I remember in 6th grade and Gavin was in my class and someone told a dad joke and he left so hard, and Gavin was usually very close to the best but smiled a lot.

Gavin was my first love and I will always hold a special place in my heart for him. Love ever ends, I truly believe that. Though our relationship ended years ago, we remained in contact, sending random messages back and forth and meeting up here and there to catch up on life. Always left shaking my head, laughing. Gavin was such a unique human, absolutely one of a kind. Sitting here now with endless gratitude for all the memories we shared, the laughs he provided every single person he met and his dedication to keep in touch. To Carolyn, Mike and the rest of the family, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace knowing how much joy Gavin brought to so many people in his short time here. Rest In Peace my little schnookums, thank you, I love you.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I just keep going back and remembering the good old days, of just always smiling and non-stop laughing with Gavin. I feel like that's how we connected, with a mixture of the love for sports and comedy. Still in shock and disbelief to hear on Gavin's passing, but I know God only takes the good ones, and lets just say that heaven just got a great one! You will be missed Gavin, but there will still be smiles and laughter from all of the memories you've brought to everyone you touched! I Love You Man! Rest In Peace my friend, save me a seat at comedy show in heaven! -Mario DeAlmeida Jr

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Gavin. My heart goes out to him and his family. Gavin and I were close for many many years and although we drifted a bit over the years always had love and respect for each other. He was a good man with an incredible sense of humor and a joy for life. One of the best story tellers I knew. A laugh that I will always remember. He introduced me to alot of things I still enjoy today. Football, rap music, and adult cartoons. I have reminisced over the past few days and was able to smile at many of the memories I'll never forget. Cheers brother, till we meet again.
