Obituary For George Edward Garvin

George E. Garvin Jr, 57, of Bristol, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 16th 2021. A lifelong resident of Bristol, he was the son of Lydia (Travers) Garvin and the late George E. Garvin Sr.
George was a 1982 graduate of the former Bristol High School where he excelled in sports and formulated lifelong friendships that he kept close until his untimely passing. He was also a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Photography and practiced his art for many years, often capturing two of his favorite subjects, boating and skiing. He was the President and owner of New England Tent for 33 years. The success of his business was not solely generated by demand, but also by his business knowledge, attention to detail, and personalized service that he gave to all his customers.
George was a member of the Bristol Rotary Club and East Bay Chamber of Commerce for many years. He played in the Bristol County football and softball leagues for Moe's Tap and Alegria Construction and was a member of the Hopeworth Association bocce league. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Oakland Raiders and the Brown and Notre Dame University football teams. His greatest passion, however, was skiing, both in New England and the Rocky Mountains, and he utilized his skiing and photography skills as a photographer for Sugarbush Resort in Vermont and Sharpshooters Professional Photography. He also enjoyed spending time on Martha's Vineyard and the Bristol Waterfront, with his roaring sense of humor and distinct laugh, enjoying his favorite libation, Amaretto DiSaronno.
Of all the things that defined George, three immediately come to mind- his sense of humor, his banter and his generosity. His friendships spanned multiple generations and locales, and while he preferred to keep his contributions private, he donated to countless individuals and organizations, never seeking personal recognition.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sisters Gail Garvin and Susan Proto (Michael), Cousin Paula Deslauriers, and numerous friends that he also considered family.
Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where family will receive friends on Friday September 24th, 4:00-8:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 25th, 11:00am in St Elizabeths Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the George E. Garvin Jr. Scholarship Fund at Roger Williams University. Please make donations to Roger Williams University, Attn: Gift Processing Department 7020, PO Box 4110, Woburn MA 01888-4110. Checks should be made payable to Roger Williams University with George E. Garvin Jr. Memorial Scholarship indicated on the memo line. Contributions can also be made at the following URL:
