Obituary For John Francis Millard

John Francis Millard of Warren, died Tuesday, May 24, 2022. Born and raised in Warren, Dr. Millard was the son of the Reverend Mr. Charles E. Millard, MD and Mildred Millard (Lowney) both from Warren as well. Professor Millard received his doctoral degree from the University of Toronto; his thesis was titled: "Laughter as Sense, a Study of Meaning." He taught philosophy and religion at Pope St. John XXIII Seminary in Weston, MA. from 2009 until the time of his death. Having Attended Portsmouth Priory (now Abbey) School, Dr. Millard was a presenter at the School's Summer Institute on Catholicism in the modern world. John loved teaching and the Church, so when he was appointed to the faculty at Pope St. John, it was a little bit of heaven. John had been the President of the Board of Directors at the George Haile Free Library in Warren for over 20 years, public service he relished dearly. Everyone who knew John remembers his steadiness of character, his quick wit, and his hearty laugh which brightened up every encounter with him. However, more important than all of that was John's devotion to the people he loved. A loving husband, John cared for Maria over the past decade after she suffered several strokes. He was equally good to his brother Dan throughout their lives, being best friends and companions through 70 years. They had many good times together on visits to music sites, historic sites, and national parks and monuments. Dan always said, "Anyone who has had a brother like John is very lucky indeed." Dr. Millard is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maria Horvath. He is also survived by brothers Charles, Jr.; Daniel, and James; and sister MaryCatherine; and by six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Vincent and Timothy. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, from 4-7PM in Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd., Warren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 10AM in St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main St., Warren. Burial will take place in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery, Vernon St., Warren. Please see www.wjsmithfh.com for arrangements.

We shared many fondly remembered moments during our graduate school time in Toronto. I will miss him. Dennis Christopher, Burlington Ontario

In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brother John. In this life you embraced him with your tender love; deliver him now from every evil and bid him eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome him into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. I will miss you John Millard.
