Jose Manuel DaCosta, 74, of Warren, RI, passed away, Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of 51 years to Maria Susete (Nunes) DaCosta. Born in Marinha Grande, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joaquim Gomes DaCosta and Maria Emilia Godinho. Mr. DaCosta had worked as a machine operator at Carol Cable for over 25 years, having worked at ITT Tech prior to that. He was educated in Portugal and joined the Portuguese Navy at age 16, serving for 4 years, which would have a huge influence on his life, as he was a very proud "Filho da Escola". He emigrated to the United States on All Saints Day, 1970. His love of learning led him to get his GED and attend the Jewelry Institute. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Ana Paula DiChristofaro and her husband Michael of Attleboro, MA; three brothers, Joaquim DaCosta of Avignon, France, Edmundo Gomes DaCosta of Marinha Grande, Portugal, and Jorge Godinho of Marinha Grande, Portugal, a sister, Olivia Godinho Leandro of Marinha Grande, Portugal, a brother in law, Mario Nunes and his wife Dolores of Warren, RI, and two sisters in law, Manuela Duarte and her husband William of Seekonk, MA, and Helen Leal and her husband Manuel of Bristol, RI, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in the US, Portugal, and France. A member of Saint Mary of the Bay parish, previously attending St Thomas the Apostle, where he was involved in groups such as the Board of Trustees and Holy Ghost Committee. He was a proud member of the Association de Marinheiros da Armada Portuguesa U.S.A., and served on the board. He was president of Lodge 54, Teofilo Braga, of the Portuguese Continental Union. Member of Luso-American Financial Fraternal Benefit Society based in California where he served as a RI Delegate as well as a member of the Board of Directors for many years. Member of the Portuguese Beneficial Association Don Luiz Filipe in Bristol for many years. He helped establish and served as president of the Portuguese School at St Elizabeth's School, so children could learn the language of their parents and grandparents. He was well versed in many subjects and loved to converse with anyone on any number of them for hours. He enjoyed spending time with his family, tending to his yard, being by the ocean, watching a good soccer game, especially when his beloved Benfica was playing, and especially looked forward to his trips back to Portugal to see his family and spend time in Sao Pedro de Moel and Nazare. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd., Warren, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, from 4-7PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at 9:30AM, from Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd., Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM in St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main Street, Warren.
