Obituary For Robert James Hessler

Robert James Hessler, 87, of Warren, RI, formerly of Stamford, CT, passed away, Friday, September 10, 2021, at his home for the previous 5 years, the Warren Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Warren. His daughter and son-in-law were by his side. Born in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late August Leo and Elizabeth (Holcomb) Hessler, and late step-mother, Grace Birney Hessler. He was the beloved father of Pamela Hessler King and a superb father-in-law to Pam's husband, Steven, of Warren. Other relatives include his niece, Margaret Ortiz, of Murrieta, CA, nephews John Hessler of Aliso Viejo, CA, and James Hessler of Issaquah, WA. He was also the brother of the late George Hessler of Irvine, CA. Mr. Hessler graduated Penn State University with a PhD in geophysics. He was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Korean War. Mr. Hessler was a genius and an animal lover. He enjoyed watching PSU Football games, reading, classic movies, gardening, travel, photography, long walks, New York City, Paris, strolls and bike rides in Ocean City, NJ, all things weather related, fine French cuisine, classical music, cooking, and wine and cheese. Bob worked as a scientific researcher for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in his beloved Cape Cod. He sold Mass Spectrometers for Bell & Howell, DuPont, as well as Cameca- a French company where he held the position of US Division President. It was while traveling to Cameca headquarters that he acquired his love of all things French. He also started his own consulting firm for scientific research companies, Hestech, Inc. He thoroughly loved the experience of being a traveling salesman. In later years he was a real estate agent for both Century 21 and William Raveis in Stamford, CT. He volunteered his time teaching English for the Citizenship Program at the community college in Stamford, CT as well as cooking and serving food at the local shelters. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 1 PM, at Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren. Burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at a later date in November 2021 -hopefully Thanksgiving Weekend.
