Obituary For Sharon F. McCANNA

Sharon Frances McCanna,73, of Warren, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2021 in the home she loved.

She was the daughter of the late James R. and Florence (Chapman) McCanna, Jr. She is survived by her devoted sister, Mary Ellen McCanna, whose constant hovering drove her to distraction. She is also survived by a brother, James McCanna, III, also of Warren.

Sharon was the cherished aunt of Kyle J Smith (Angela McKane) of Colorado. She is also survived by her much loved cousin, Ellen N. Breen (William Clogher) of Attleboro, and an amazing group of friends whose love and support was steadfast. She was predeceased by many beloved relatives.

Sharon taught third grade at St. Philomena School in Portsmouth where she inspired the minds and touched the hearts of her students. To quote a colleague, Sharon was a much loved member of the faculty for more than thirty years. She loved teaching and her students. Her real strength was in understanding each childs gifts.

Sharon loved family, friends, having her feet in the sand at Second Beach, ice cream and the Rolling Stones, not necessarily in that order. In the summer of 2019 while she was receiving chemotherapy, which left her tired and weak, she mustered her strength to attend a Stones concert at Foxborough Stadium. Strong willed and fiercely determined, its difficult to speak of her in the past tense. May her memory be cherished.

Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.

A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to McAuley Ministries, PO Box 73195, Providence, RI 02907, or any charitable organization endeavoring to assist and educate children.

Arrangements by SMITH FUNERAL and MEMORIAL SERVICES, Warren.

Ellen Breen I grew up on the same street as my cousins, The McCannas. We were in essence one extended family with our two houses blending together as one. We shared many holidays, Sundays at the beach, road trips and daily family interactions. My cousin Sharon was more like a big sister to me. She was a babysitter for my brother and me when we were young and would always let us stay up later than we were supposed to. I remember many times when Sharon would say â??Quick go to bed!â?? as my parents were pulling into the driveway. Sharon brought me to see my first ballet, The Nutcracker, in Boston. She would bring me, still a pre-teen, to Boston on the bus to go shopping at Jordan Marsh and Filenes. To get to the stores, we had to walk through the combat zone which seemed forbidden and therefore thrilling to a fledgling teen. When I was a junior in high school we drove down to Daytona Beach for April school vacation week. I donâ??t think I realized the significance of that event at the time. I had lost my mother the year before and I think Sharon was trying to fill some of the void left in me in the wake of that loss. Sharon was a teacher and it was a vocation that we shared. She had a head full of facts and information that encompassed a variety of subject areas. I used to call her the â??Jeopardy Queenâ?? because when we would play as kids, she would always win. I think we all stopped playing because well, what was the point?. My sympathy for MaryEllen's loss can not be measured. Neither can my gratitude for the care she provided her sister these last difficult years. I will miss Sharon so much but in my mind, I picture her either sitting at a big kitchen table with every relative and beloved family friend who has passed or, alternatively, sitting on the beach with her face lifted toward the sun. Safe home, Sharon.

I am sending caring thoughts for Family & Friends of Sharon. I was at Main Street School, Joyce Street School and Mary V Quirk with her. When last visiting Warren, from my home in Manchester, England, I was in 'Nick's Drug Store' and thought I recognised the tall lady who was shopping in there. I asked if she was Sharon and it was. I feels so lucky to have known her and remember skipping rope and laughing!! I was Brenda Feather then ..... now Moorhouse
