Obituary For Alba Hamel

Alba (DeCesare) Hamel, 99, died peacefully on Sunday, February 22, at St. Elizabeth's Manor. She was the wife of the late Ernest J. Hamel and daughter of the late Giovanni and Agnes (Sarandrea) DeCesare.

Born in Providence on February 15, 1916, she moved to Warren in 1948. Before moving to Warren, she worked for the Outlet Company in Providence. She was the devoted mother of Richard Hamel of El Paso,Texas and Sharon Cavallaro of Bristol. She leaves four grandchildren: Kristen (Cavallaro) Cartwright of Seekonk, Jennifer Cavallaro of Fall River, Marco and Dante Hamel of El Paso,Texas. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Kayla McDermott of Clearwater, Florida, Korryn Cartwright of Seekonk, and Enzo Hamel of El Paso, Texas. In addition she was the sister of the late Eleanor (DeCesare) Ventham of Providence and John DeCesare Jr. of Van Nuys, California. She leaves her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Betty Hamel of Warren and as well as many loving nieces and nephews from California, Bristol, and Warren.

Alba was involved in numerous activities throughout her lifetime. She was a Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, President of the Little League,Teen Club Advisor, Officer in the St. Jean Baptiste Women's Guild. and PTA "Mother of the Year". Much younger than her years, Alba was so active that even in her late nineties she traveled to California to visit her relatives and care for her younger brother. Her passion for cooking and baking for her family and friends was admired by all. She would beam with pleasure when loved ones and friends complimented her natural gift for cooking. Alba was a most loving, passionate, strong and caring woman. Not only did she raise her own children, but she helped raise her grandchildren and several families throughout Barrington, Bristol and Swansea. While very healthy for the majority of her life, she never lost her vibrant smile, alertness and zest for living.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service in celebration of her life on Friday, February 27 starting at 9:30 am from the Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, Rhode Island, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 am in St. Jean Baptiste Church, 324 Main St. Warren, Rhode Island. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 26 at Smith Funeral Home on Schoolhouse Road in Warren from 4 to 7 P.M.
