Andrew Ferranti, 84, lovingly known as “Andy” passed away on May 8th, 2026 at Charleton Memorial Hospital, after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to Elizabeth A (Primiano MacGovern) Ferranti . Andrew was born May 5th, 1942 in New York City to the late Sam and Nettie Ferranti.
Besides his wife, he leaves behind a large family, and was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather and uncle, John MacGovern (Patty), Lisa MacGovern Clark (the late Robert Clark), Christina Ferranti-Clift (Stephen) , Anthony Ferranti (Debra), and Nina (Ferranti) Ahern (Christopher) ; his grandchildren, Patrick, Kyle, Scott, Sam, and Alex; his great-grandchildren, Alistair and Dorian and Owen; his brother, George, Ferranti (Linda) and Brother &Sister in Law (Mike and Eleanor Pickering). He was also the Uncle of Katherine, Sarah, Michael, Carole, Bill, Scott, Michelle and their children.
As a young man, Andrew graduated from the Maritime Academy in Fort Skyler, Throggs Neck peninsula in New York. He then became first mate on passenger and cargo ships and sailed all around the world. Then he received his masters in education and taught for over 3 decades at Old Rochester Regional Jr High in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. During his summers he sailed as Captain for several years for the Providence, Newport, Block Island Ferry. Soon after, he was the Captain for the Woods Hole, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority for several decades before retiring. He also owned a sewing machine repair company.
A member of the International Barbershop Society, he enjoyed many years of country wide singing contests and was always inviting friends and family to sing. He also enjoyed working on many events at the Warren Baptist Church, as a member of the local community. He loved ham radio and spent countless hours connecting with people across continents, especially during the radio contests he so enjoyed. He carried a deep love for astronomy throughout his life, and of particular interest was often the moon. Through long nights at his telescope, he created a remarkable moon map that reflected not only incredible patience and skill, but genuine wonder.
To know Andy was to know laughter. He loved playing jokes, teasing the people he cared about, and finding humor in everyday moments. His quick wit and playful spirit could light up a room, and his family will forever remember his unique sense of humor and joke playing nature woven through holidays, dinners, and ordinary days that became extraordinary simply because he was there.
Above all else, Andy loved his wife Elizabeth and his family deeply. He taught those around him to be happy, stay curious, laugh often, and appreciate both the vastness of the world and the beauty hidden in small every day moments. His life was one of adventure, intelligence, humor, and heart, and his memory will continue to guide and inspire those who loved him, forever.
Funeral arrangements are with Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI where the family will receive guests on Saturday, May 23, 2026 from 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM.
