Obituary For Anne Elizabeth Barry

Anne Elizabeth Barry, 91, of Bristol, RI, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Grace Barker Health in Warren, RI.

Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late John Francis Barry and Marguerite Regina (Smith) Barry. She is survived by a niece Kathryn Barry of Warren and two nephews, John V. Barry and his wife Lori of Warren and Bill Barry of Warren. She is also survived by great nephew Craig DePina of Warren, great niece Cailyn DePina of Warren, great niece Courtney Rathbone of Warren, and great great nephew Aiden Roberts of Warren. She also leaves the Koubek family of Maryland. She was predeceased by her brother John F. Barry, Jr. and his wife Ella.

After Anne graduated from R.I.C.E., she was a teacher at Waddington School in Riverside, RI. For the majority of her career she was a Professor of Education at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI.

Anne had a cheerful smile and an ability to remain positive throughout her life. Her gregarious nature and fine sense of humor ensured a large number of loyal friends for all of her years.

Loving to entertain and cook, Anne held a traditional Christmas Eve celebration at her home which family and friends enjoyed for over 50 years. Each year she also opened her home for a celebration of Easter. Regardless of age, a competitive Easter egg hunt concluded the day's festivities.

Among Anne's many loves were traveling, the beach, and animals. Her adventurous spirit led her to visit Ireland, England, and Scotland numerous times. In addition, she joined friends on a memorable Mediterranean Cruise. Her favorite travel destinations in the United States were Alaska and the Southwest.

Beginning in her childhood and through her eighties, Anne spent many a summer day at Baker's Beach in Westport, MA. It was an opportunity to relax with friends, enjoy the ocean surf, and experience a beautiful sunset.

Throughout her life Anne always had a loyal canine companion by her side. Always looking out for the "underdog," Anne made it a point to always adopt a dog from a shelter. She was never disappointed.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 8-9am at Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren. Immediately following, funeral services will be held at 9am.

This will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main Street, Warren, RI. Burial will take place in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery, Vernon Street, Warren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Warren Animal Shelter, 80 Wood St., Warren, RI 02885.

    Dear Barry Family, I am saddened to learn of Miss Barry's passing (I was her sixth-grade student at Waddington in 1962-63 and though she gave me permission many years later to call her Anne, I couldn't bring myself to do so). In October 2004, I hosted a gathering of a dozen of my Waddington classmates, our principal Helen Brush, our first grade teacher Ellin Smith, and our beloved Anne Barry. Miss Barry was the teacher everyone hoped to have, and that October day at our mini-reunion, many of us told her how much we admired her; in fact, so much so that nearly half of us had gone on to careers in teaching. I'm glad we took the opportunity to tell her. Miss Barry was smart, happy, filled with humor and an earnest desire that we succeed. Her classroom was always a haven of learning, respect, camaraderie and achievement, with a hint of magic. Miss Barry, we will always remember you with great memories and love. Susan Hirst Read

    Dear Barry Family, We were saddened to read about Anne's passing and also regretted not knowing about her death so we might attend her funeral. As our neighbor for many years, we recall her warmth and positive energy and her love of dogs. A particular canine story comes to mind. Anne had just installed a wall of custom made draperies in her home. Her mischievous pup decided that the bottom of the draperies were too tempting and proceeded to gnaw a good six inches off the entire hem! Anne took the pup's behavior in good stride and with a characteristic laugh. It was a sincere pleasure being her neighbor. May her memory be eternal, The Popovici Family

    Dear Barry Family, I had the distinct pleasure of being one of Miss Barry's education students at RWU. In addition, she was my critic teacher when I did my student teaching. She was magical with her students and would welcome us to her home where we would have work sessions. She clearly loved what she did, and inspired me to have a forty five year career in education. I taught for many years in the Cranston School Department snd then became a GED teacher for CCAP. I wish I had known about her passing sooner, as I could have attended her service. In closing, please know that she inspired others snd left a lasting footprint on this planet. My sincere condolences to all of you, and may she Rest In Peace . Sincerely, Barbara Landoch Olean
