Obituary For Audrey F. Galligan

Audrey F. Galligan, 90, of Little Compton, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Audrey was born on May 6, 1936, the only child of Harry B. Field and Winifred Cuff Field of the Bronx. An affable and precocious child, she made numerous lifelong friends and excelled academically at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, graduating at age 15, then matriculating at The College of New Rochelle. She earned her master's degree in Educational Supervision and Administration from Fordham University, and met Jack Galligan when she was a young schoolteacher in the Bronx. They married on December 27th, 1958, and raised five children in Washington, DC, then Weston, Massachusetts, and Little Compton, Rhode Island.

Audrey shared her talents as a teacher, real estate broker and community volunteer. She was especially passionate about social justice, working to help the homeless, the unfortunate, and those isolated by life's circumstances. Audrey was instrumental in the trailblazing Catholic Jewish Committee of the Archdiocese of Boston, promoting mutual understanding and respect for others’ traditions. In retirement Audrey and Jack enjoyed more than 20 years traveling the world and spending a couple months each year on Amelia Island, Florida. They visited their many relatives and friends, and celebrated time with their beloved grandchildren.

In 2012, Audrey experienced an unfortunate and severe fall, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. In the ensuing years, she worked diligently to regain her mobility and speech, with assistance from family and numerous medical and support staff. While limited in her cognition and communications, she continued to enjoy visits and vacations, and shed any societal restraints in her constant expressions of love for others.

Audrey was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Jack, and is survived by her five children, Martin (wife Cathy), Teddi Ann (husband David), Monica (husband James), Thomas (wife Sarah), and Charlie (wife Kerry), grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her cherished in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI 02885 where the family will receive family and friends from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Words of Remembrance will be shared at Smith Funeral & Memorial Services on Friday, October 2, 2026 starting at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, 180 Boston Post Road, Weston, MA 02493 at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, one appropriate way to appreciate Audrey would be to volunteer your time helping others. Alternatively, the Academy of Mount St. Ursula Advancement Office would welcome donations in Audrey’s name at 330 Bedford Park Boulevard, Bronx, New York 10458.

Audrey and the entire Galligan family welcomed us when we moved to Baker's Hill on a snowy January day in 1984. Tom even shoveled our driveway so the movers could get access to the house. Audrey loved to connecting people. Our family always looked forward to the Galligan Easter Party where we had the opportunity to see members of the Galligan Family as well as neighbors. May she rest in peace. Don and Pate Pierson

While we did not grow up together or attend the College of New Rochelle in the same time frame, I feel I knew you and Jack through your youngest son Charlie and my daughter (your beloved daughter-in-law) Kerry. They loved you dearly and enjoyed their time with you. You never failed to make them laugh. Yours was a life well lived and shall not be forgotten. Mary Lu Crane
