To Bernieâ??s family and friends I am a fraternity brother who lives 3000 miles away and who hasnâ??t seen Bernie (as I knew him) since 1968 when we graduated and the military called. I just want to add my sympathy for you who love him and who will miss him the most. His passing deeply saddens me. My memories of him are sweet and lasting. For 3 1/2 years our lives were fairly entwined and I feel privileged to have known him.

Bernie and I grew up in Warren during a great time of life. We were at URI in the 1960â??s and joined the same fraternity. Bernie was a good friend to many and had a great sense of humor. I last saw him at a fraternity reunion this fall in Newport. It turned out to be his good by to his long time friends. Weâ??ll miss Bernie very much but keep his memories. Friendship is the sweetest influence is our motto. God Bless Bernie. Ham

John, Mark, Val & Adam, You have been in my constant thoughts and prayers. Growing up out-of-state, my chances to interact with Uncle Bernie were limited...weddings, funerals, family get together. After I was married those chances were fewer. And to know that I could see where someone who didn't know your Dad would think, what impact could he have had on someone he saw so little? And for those who did know your Dad, they will understand when I say he was a presence in my life nonetheless -- a piece of that invisible shield that we each carry with us called family. I remember once when my children were little they made their own newspaper and I sent it out to the grandparents. Well, your Dad must have seen it at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Everyone else read there little scribbles and said oh cute, but your Dad was the only one that contacted me and tried to subscribe for future issues! Never too young for a business lesson! I wish I could be with you in person to share my condolences but know that I will be praying for all of you, and smiling with tears in my eyes as I remember your Dad sitting under the shade of that big old tree at Grandma and Grandpa's.

We were lucky to meet and get to know Bernie when he signed up for the Master Gardener 2018 class. He was an active and enthusiastic part of our small study group. His love of family and gardening came through so strongly. Bernie shared some burgundy bush beans with us that we grew and enjoyed for several weeks this past summer. We called them â??Bernie Beansâ?? and will continue to grow them, thinking fondly of him.

There was never a time in my life when I didn't know Bernie. We were baby and preschool playmates. We were classmates at St John's and Warren High. We were Little League and HS baseball and summer league softball teammates. We were freshmen dormitory "roomies" at URI and we shared a study room (where Bern actually studied) in our FIJI fraternity house and we remained friends ....until last week. In all those years we never had an argument or even a serious disagreement, mainly because Bernie had the patience and intelligence to be able to calmly deal with anything that arose and the ability to find humor in any situation. Yeah, we were playmates, classmates, teammates, friends and brothers. My deepest condolences to Donna, John, Mark, Adam and Valerie. To his grandkids, his brothers Bob, Donald and Jim and to all who've known and loved him ....as I did.
