Obituary For Bernard Stack, Sr
Bernard Stack, Sr., 93, of Warren, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Haven Health Center of Warren.
He was born in Warren, the son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Olszewska) Stachowiak.
He was the husband of the late Meta (Atkinson) Stack.
Attended Providence College. He was employed from 1933-1945 as a ship planner machinist for the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport. From 1946- to 1960 He was employed in procurement of materials for three local jewelry firms in Providence. From 1960 to 1974 he was the chief equipment examiner for Intelex Systems of ITT in assembly and operation of the turnkey post office in Providence. He was a member of The Baptist Church in Warren. He was active in Warren Boy Scouts and was the third Eagle Scout in Warren in 1927. In scouting he was obliged to sew his own equipment consisting of tents, sleeping bag, knapsacks and sails. He had a hobby in music and participated in three choirs in Warren. He taught himself to play the ukulele, banjo, piano, trumpet and the trombone. He played the trombone with the Riverside Firemans Band and the Bristol Train of Artillery Band. He sailed his 28ft sloop for 19 years with his wife as crew, on frequent trips to Nantucket. He researched and brought to light from the diary of Lt Frederick Mackenzie, British Army officer stationed in Newport, a published account of the 600 Hessian and British Troops who raided Warren during the revolution to destroy boats for transporting colonial troops to Newport from Tiverton. The winters from 1927 to 1974 his hobby was skate-sailing on various bodies of water including Bristol Harbor, Kickemuit Reservoir, Palmer River, Echo Lake, Mashpaug Pond, Roger Williams Park, Watermans Lake and Norton Lake (Taunton). He recorded speeds of 70 to 100 m.p.h.
Beloved father of Valerie Wehrenburg of Crystal River, Fla. and Bernard Stack Jr. of Warren. Brother of Pelagia Bak of Cranston, Genevieve Barone of Rumford, Felix Stack of Warren and Edward Stack of Michigan. Loving grandfather of Joel Stack of Fall River.
Private arrangements were handled by William J Smith Funeral Home.
Internment will be in South Burial Ground, Warren.
