Obituary For Carleton Edward Johnson Jr.
Carleton Edward Johnson Jr., 90, of Swansea, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Janet (Monast) Johnson, with whom they shared 64 years together.
He was born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Carleton and Dorothy (Blaney) Johnson Sr.
He lived in Swansea his whole life. Carleton was a 1954 graduate of Joseph Case High School and then served in the Army National Guard for 14 years as a Personnel Sergeant First Class E-7.
He was a hard worker, and talented craftsman. He owned his own building and remodeling business for 40+ years, Carl built and worked on many homes throughout the area. After retiring from that he sold flowers and plants at his son’s store, Johnson’s Roadside Market where customers will always remember his infectious smile and excellent gardening advice.
The family would like to give their heartfelt gratitude to Grace Barker Nursing Home for the three wonderful years of care, and the friendships created while Carleton made that his home. The family would also like to thank Rhode Island Hospital ICU unit, for the great care and support of our families wishes.
In addition to his wife, Janet, he is survived by his children Timothy Johnson and his wife Jeanne of Swansea and Karen (Johnson) Paquette and her husband Paul of Swansea; four grandchildren, Ashley (Johnson) Barrows and her husband Matthew of Rehoboth, Brittany (Johnson) Cordeiro and her husband Stephen of Warren, Tyler Paquette and his wife Sarah of Somerset and Benjamin Paquette of Swansea; two great grandchildren, Henry Barrows and Logan Cordeiro. Also, several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Paul, Thomas, Harold Johnson and Hazel (Johnson) Gifford.
Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd., Warren, RI 02885, where the family will receive relatives and guests for Visitation on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 9-11AM followed immediately with a funeral home service at 11AM. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to: Boys Town, Boys Town Donation or St. Jude St. Jude Donation
