Obituary For Carlo Longo

LONGO, CARLO 93, of Barrington, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center.

He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. (DeStefano) Longo to which he was married for 68 years.

Born in Panni, Foggia, ITALY on December 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Donato and Anna Antonia (Montecalvo) Longo. Carlo was a Letter Carrier with the Barrington Post Office for 25 years retiring in 1986.

Carlo was a loving and faithful man who was passionate about many things, the greatest of which were golf and opera. Beginning as a caddy in the 1930s at Rhode Island Country Club, he went on to win many amateur golf titles and continued to caddy into his 70s. He made an elusive hole in one at age 72. He and his wife Dorothy made many trips to visit the famed Metropolitan Opera House in New York and he was a past officer of the Rhode Island Opera League. Carlo was a Trustee of Holy Angels Church in Barrington to which he belonged for 83 years and also served as both a lector and Eucharistic minister. Carlo was stationed in Italy during World War II with the Fifth Army, G Company. Because of his ability to speak fluent Italian, Carlo served as Interpreter and personal driver to Col. John Boettiger, former son-in-law of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, an honor of which he spoke proudly for decades to come.

Carlo was the loving father of Carl A. Longo and his wife Roseann of Providence, Dennis M. Longo and his wife Joanne of Attleboro, MA, Mary Ann Cicerchia and her husband Robert of Coventry, Barbara Longo DeSano of Warren, and Christine M. Longo of Pawtucket. He was the devoted grandfather of Tracy A. Guerra and her husband John, Robert M. Cicerchia and his wife Sharon G. Leifer, Matthew C. Cicerchia, Carly Longo and Antonia Longo. He was the adoring great-grandfather of Jacob and Ella Cicerchia. Carlo was the brother of Violet Higgins and her husband Stephen of Barrington and Anthony Longo and his wife Alice of Bristol. He was the brother of the late Nicholas J. Longo.

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, where the family will receive friends Sunday, July 20, 2014 from 3pm to 6pm and 10:30am on Monday, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be concelebrated on Monday, July 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, Maple Avenue, Barrington.
