Obituary For Darrell L. Nelson, Jr.

Darrell L. Nelson, Jr., 73, of Tiverton passed peacefully at home with family on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was the loving husband of Deborah Fontana Nelson, and proud father to his son Evan and daughter Emma. Born in Newport, RI, Darrell was the son of the late Rosemarie (Francis) and Darrell L. Nelson, Sr.

For 35 years, Darrell made his career as an electrical engineer at Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport. He most treasured spending time with his family, watching Evan play baseball, football and soccer, and sharing his love for eclectic types of music with Emma while singing in the car and skipping rocks at Sapowet Beach. He enjoyed coaching Little League and Tiverton Youth Soccer. He looked forward to long road trips with Deborah to visit the children after they relocated to NC. More recently, he treasured leisurely rides through Colt State Park and Newport with his canine buddy, Dixon.

Darrell reveled in the Wednesday night race seasons on his sailboat, Quick Decision, and meeting up with friends afterward at Bristol Yacht Club. He was also a member of Mount Hope Sailing Association and The Elks Club.

Growing up, Darrell created many treasured memories with family and friends in the Bristol and Warren area. His big claim to fame was being featured in the “Bristol’s Biggie” Fourth of July photo in the Journal Bulletin in 1974.

In addition to his wife and children, Darrell leaves behind his siblings Linda, David, and Laura, with whom he created many fond, lifelong memories. He will be remembered as a well-loved husband, dad, brother, friend and neighbor.

Celebration of life service is with Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI for relatives and friends from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, September 13.

I had the opportunity to work with Darrell nearly 40 years.....during that time we forged a friendship that included happy hours and in the early years, sailing. We travelled together extensively, often just he and I, with the sponsors and customers always appreciating Darrell's capabilities and great personality. After work it was ball games, dinners, we would have some laughs, and yes even a Tom Petty concert. Once the kids arrived it was clear he loved to talk about the family and would keep me posted on Evan and Emma's activities. I am thankful for the memories and know that he will be deeply missed. My sincerest condolences to Deb, Evan, and Emma. I had the privilege and pleasure of working (as well as scheming and laughing) with Darrell from my start at NUWC until both our retirements. Although there is too much to put into a paragraph, he was a fine engineer, a great colleague, a wonderful family man, and a good friend. Godspeed Darrell; I'll miss you my friend. Paul Carreiro

It is with much sadness that I mourn the loss of my colleague Darrell. When I first began working at Newport, Darrell and I connected and he definitely helped eased my transition. After Darrell's federal retirement, he joined Precise Systems where we shared an office. During COVID, we maintained our distance from each other but I could always hear Darrell attentively listening to the latest news and speculation on the various sports radio channel. Our paths would diverge again but we always maintained contact through social media. I'll miss those memes he would share and I look forward to the day that we share that office in the afterlife where we provide our daily wisdom on how the Patriots should be managed. Until that day, I will remember that tomorrow is never guaranteed...always live your life to the fullest. Thank you Darrell for setting that example. Devo
