Obituary For Dr. Malcolm L. McInnis

Dr. Malcolm L. McInnis, 90, of Warren, RI, devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on July 29, 1935, in North Dighton, Massachusetts, Malcolm was predeceased by his loving first wife Ann (Pivirotto), parents Daniel and Rachel (Taylor), half-siblings Alice Harwood Perry (Oliver) and Fredrick Harwood (Marion), brothers Donald McInnis and John (Eva) McInnis, sister Myrtle (Brant) Haworth.

Malcolm’s legacy is one of love, service, and dedication to his family and community. He graduated from Coyle High School in Taunton, MA in 1953, where he played the saxophone in the school band. Following his passion for religion, he decided to dedicate his life to becoming a Monastic Priest, attending Holy Cross Seminary in Dunkirk, NY and St. Paul Monastery in Pittsburg, PA. Ultimately, after three years, and just prior to taking his vows, he decided to leave the monastery to start a career in medicine and pursue life as a married, family man.

He attended Providence College, earning a BS in Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental in 1961, and went on to the University of Maryland, where he received his D.D.S. in 1964. Malcolm then served as a Captain in the United States Army for two years, providing general dentistry services at Fort Holabird in Baltimore, MD. He later earned a master's degree in Orthodontics from Georgetown University in 1969.

Malcolm married Ann Pivirotto in 1962, and they shared 25 years together before her sudden death. They were blessed with three children whom they raised in Barrington, RI where Malcolm practiced Orthodontics until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Mac prided himself on helping to create beautiful, attractive smiles throughout his career. Professionally he served as the President of the Rhode Island Association of Orthodontists, Bristol County Dental Society, Rhode Island Society of Dentistry for Children and as Chairman of Rhode Island Dental Association Dentist’s Health Committee. In his free time, Malcolm served on the Board of the Barrington YMCA and was a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island. He was a master craftsman, woodworker, and sign-maker - many friends developed a deep appreciation for and benefitted from his talent and skills in these areas.

Malcolm was a long-time member of the Rhode Island Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and paddle tennis. He had a terrific sense of humor and a deep passion for sharing jokes and making people laugh. He was fortunate to find love again and married Lynie in 1989. They traveled the world together on cycling and kayaking trips, and he spent his later years as a formidable domino player, puzzle-solver and expert ice cream taster.

Malcolm is survived by his adoring wife of 36 years Lynie McInnis, his children Laurie of Concord, NH, Michael (Karen) of Highland Beach, FL, and Douglas (Kelly) of Gorham, ME and his beloved grandchildren Jack, Nicholas, Shane, and Connor McInnis, Damon and Blake Wallace and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is deeply grateful for the loving care he received from Karen, Kristina, Rochelle, Kim and the team at Hattie Ide Chaffee Home during the past 2 years.

Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, RI 02885. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Church 108 Washington Road, Barrington, RI on Friday 1/30 at 10:00 am. Burial will be private.

My father cleaned Dr McInnis office when I was a boy. My father was diagnosed with cancer just after I got my braces from him. Dr. McInnis refuded to accept any money for my dental work after hearing of my father illness. That stuck with me as I grew old enough to truly appreciate that kind gesture. It has been something I tried to remember and pay forward. He was a kind Dr. and man. May he rest in peace.

Sending hugs and love to Lynie and all my cousins. Nobody in the McInnis family had a wit like Uncle Malcolm. I will always remember the Christmas cards of reindeer with braces! Here's to a life lived with adventure, humor, giving, and love.
