Dr. Michael F. McGinn, 64, of New York, NY, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at his residence. He was the beloved son of the late Richard J. McGinn and Barbara J. (D’Arezzo) McGinn.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Michael grew up in Portsmouth, RI and was a 1978 graduate of Portsmouth Abbey School. Michael went on to further his education and completed his bachelors degree from the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1982. He later earned his Masters degree and PhD in psychology from Pace University in New York, NY.

Michael was a school psychologist at Freeport Dodd Middle School on Long Island, NY for 20 years. He leaves many cherished colleagues and close friends in New York.

He treasured his family and friends, he was a world traveler and spent several summers in France especially loving the country and the culture because he was fluent in French. Whenever possible he would come home to Bristol, RI to enjoy the Bristol Fourth of July parade and all of the festivities.

He was a member of the Knickerbocker Sailing Association, the Brothers Claes Retreats and he was an Eagle Scout. He was also an active member of the UPenn Alumni Association and the Portsmouth Abbey School Alumni Association.

Michael is survived by his sister Patricia M. Francis and her husband Christopher of Bristol; aunts Maria Bridges of Barrington and Eleanor McGinn of Bristol; niece Nikola Francis; nephews Christopher and Casey Francis and many cousins. In addition he is survived by his best friend of 45 years Ed Dougherty.

Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, RI 02885. Relatives and guests are invited to gather for a Memorial Service on Monday, August 25, 2025, from 9:00AM - 10:00AM with a Funeral Home Service to follow. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol, RI.
