Obituary For Frances Ann Nunes

Warren - Frances Ann (Catalano) Nunes (87), of Warren passed away after a brief illness , on Friday, May 1st.

Born in Bristol, RI, she was the daughter of the late Francis Paul Catalano and Anna (Palumbo) Bernstein.

The wife of the late Anthony N. Nunes. A teachers assistant. She dearly loved her students and Hugh Cole Elementary School. As a Patriots season ticket holder for over 35 years, she was a passionate fan.

If you were lucky enough, you got to travel to the Patriots games, in Foxboro, in Mrs. Nunes train car where there was a moving tailgate party going on. Nothing could keep Frances from seeing her boys play at Foxboro.

She may have chosen this time to leave us to spare her from seeing Brady and Gronk playing for Tampa Bay. During 1972-73, she was the RI VFW Ladies Auxiliary Department President. She often marched in the Bristol Fourth of July Parade.

Cries of Hey Franny or Mrs. Nunes could be heard along the route. At Veterans or Memorial Day Programs, Frances was either part of the ceremony or singing Sleep Soldier Boy. She was involved in many programs that supported veterans.

Mrs. Nunes was also known to many as the orange lady as she always brought oranges to the Warren High School wrestling team. She was their best cheerleader. She loved day trips with her late husband, Tony, to Cape Cod and drives through Colt Park. "Frances spent lots of time at Jack's Family Restaurant, enjoying the food and visiting with the Gomes family. She was there so often ,they named a drink after her."

She enjoyed lunch and Thursday night trivia at the 99 Restaurant with her best friend, Frank. She will be remembered for her trays of Italian cookies, her generous spirit, her love for the children of Warren and her larger than life personality.

Whether she was standing in an open field serving food to the volunteers building the playground near Hugh Cole or working under the food tent at the Warren Quahog Festival, Frances was a big part of Warren and Warren was a big part of her.

She is survived by her children, Jerome Lawrence (Kathey), Jonathan Lawrence, Dawn Wardyga (Alec Jr.), Debra Romano (Charles Jr). Stepchildren Deborah Cardoza (Dwight), Linda Corbett (Phil), Susan Galligan (Charles). Grandchildren-Debra Maynard (William), Jonathan Lawrence (Amanda), Charles Romano III, Carly Romano (Jimmy), Jeffrey Wardyga (Lisa), Nicholas Romano (Genesis), Victoria Romano (Eddie), Julie Wardyga (Roberto), Jaime Wardyga, (Rob), Jennifer Wardyga (Blair), David Romano (Sabrina).

Great grandchildren-Drew, Kathryn, Ayden, Aria, Dean, Jayden, Maddy and Alex. She is also survived by her sister JoAnn Avila and her dear friend Frank Mello. She also leaves behind her Grace Barker Care facility family. She is the grandmother of the late Jason Wardyga and sister to the late Barbara Pattie, stepmother of the late Norbert and Kevin Nunes.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Hugh Cole School Memorial Day Fund, checks made payable to Hugh Cole School with Fran Nunes in the memo line.

Funeral services are private and for the family only. Arrangements by Smith Funeral and Memorial Services.

    Moving to Warren years ago, I would see Franny and Tony volunteering at many civic and charity events. What stood out most was their dedication at the Warren Memorial Day services. After Tony's passing, Franny never stopped with her willingness to give of herself for the benefit of others. She truly loved being able to help out those in need. RIP Franny, thank you for doing so much for so many. You will never be forgotten....

    Hi Mom, It was 6 months ago today that you left us and I'm still not wanting to believe it's true. I am missing you more with each passing day - I could never imagine my life without you in it. I hope and pray that you are finally at peace and want you to know that my family and I will never forget the lifetime of memories you left us with.     I was sad to discover Mrs. Nunes has passed away. I remember her from school and from Memorial Days, where she would sing each year. On Memorial Day when I was nine year old, Mrs. Nunes walked up to me and asked if I could sing during the ceremony. She had said it was because she had a sore throat. This may or may not have been true. Maybe she wanted to give me the opportunity to sing because she knew that I could. I am still singing at Warren's Memorial Day ceremonies 25 years later. I am forever grateful for what she did for me that day. Her actions made me part of something bigger and greater than myself at such a young age, and it is one of the experiences that has fundamentally shaped me into the woman I am today.
