Obituary For Gam Y Mark

Gam Yee Mark of Warren, RI died on March 12, 2015 due to complications following his battle with lymphoma. He was 77.

He is survived by Marianne Mark, his wife of 50 years, his children and their spouses, Margaret Mark and Christian Ronneberg of Hanover, MA, and their sons Jack and Henry; Peter Mark and Vivien Zheng-Mark of Coventry, RI; Karen Mark and Steve Schoonveld of Mansfield, MA, their sons Ted and Harry, and their dog George; and Corinne Mark and Claire Musso of Cambridge, MA. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Roger Mark and Hon Fong Mark, Virginia Hoadley and Rick Hoadley, and Henry Mark and Margie Mark, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Born on March 11, 1938 in Guangdong, China, Gam traveled to the United States at a young age to live with his parents, Thid Koy and Helen Mark. He worked at the family-owned Bing Sum Restaurant in Warren, RI from the time his father opened it in 1950. He was the head chef and owner of Bing Sum from 1971 until the restaurant closed in 2000. He married Marianne in Hong Kong in August 1964 and returned to the United States to start a family in Warren.

Gam was a man of few words unless there was a funny story to tell or something that he felt you needed to know, in which case he could speak at length. He enjoyed cooking and baking, and liked to show how much he cared for family and friends by cooking for them; it wasnt unusual to come for a visit and find that he had made your favorite dish, or for him to surprise you by hand-delivering it himself. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandsons. He was a collector, often repairing or restoring appliances and furniture. Having fished throughout his life, he could often be found casting into local waters. He also enjoyed gardening and playing the slot machines.

Gam will be buried in a private ceremony on March 16, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605 (donate.lls.org). Mark and I were classmates at Warren High School, class of '57. I recall several years ago stopping by at the restaurant on a social visit and speaking with Mark about our school days which seemed so long ago. He was proud to take me in the back kitchen and show me what improvements he had made in the business started by his father and mother. A man of few words but always ready to tell a story about his family or business. Sadly missed. Robert G. Pare, Sr Warren Chief of Police (retired)
