Gayle Melissa (Baxter) Nunes, 79, of Warren, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Grace Barker Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Gabriel G. Nunes to whom she was married for 54 years.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Dorothea (Malone) Baxter. She was the sister of the late Betsy J. (Baxter) Nield.

Gayle graduated in 1962 from Mt. Pleasant High School in Providence. Following high school, she attended the Providence Branch of the Rhode Island School of Practical Nursing. In 1963, she began her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse, most recently at Rhode Island Veterans' Home in Bristol. She retired after 27 years of service at the veterans' home.

She enjoyed puzzles, gardening, scrapbooking as well as other arts and crafts, but most of all spending time with her family.

Gayle is survived by her son Todd and his wife Rita of Warren and her daughter Melissa (Nunes) Arnold and her husband Paul of Bothell, Washington. She was the grandmother of Elizabeth Arnold and Nathan Arnold and the step-grandmother of Angela Bergen and Andrew Carlson. She was the step-great-grandmother of Aveena Bergen, Evaly Bergen, and Julia Carlson. Gayle is also survived by her niece Amy Nield and her nephews Jeff Nield and Paul Nunes.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and friends at Atria Bay Spring and Grace Barker Nursing Center for their kindness, care, and support provided to Gayle.

Her funeral service will be held Friday, July 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the SMITH FUNERAL and MEMORIAL SERVICES, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI.

Burial will follow in Acotes Hill Cemetery, 1049 Putnam Pike, Chepachet, RI.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
