Obituary For George Flynn

George Flynn, 68 of Putnum St., Somerville, MA and maintained a home in Warren, RI died Sunday August 29, 2004 at Wingate at Brighton in Boston.

Born in Fall River, MA to the parents of the late George P. and Anna M. (Brown) Flynn Sr.

He has been a resident of both Cambridge & Somerville, MA since 1975, coming from Warren, RI.

He was a Proof Reader/Copy Editor for Cambridge Prepress Services, Everett, MA for the last 20 years.

He was a communicant of St Mary of the Bay Church in Warren, RI. Educated in the Warren Public School, he first came to the attention of this community at the age of six, when the Providence Journal noted in a feature article that, having started to read at the age of two, he was now capable of seventh and eighth grade assignments.

He was a lifelong collector of stamps and science fiction books and magazines. During his elementary school years, he appeared on a number of Providence area radio stations to discuss stamp-collecting issues.

Mr. Flynn was the valedictorian of the Warren High School Class of 1953 and the valedictorian of the Class of 1957 at Providence College, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and was honored with the Summa Cum Laude designation.

Following post-graduate work at Yale University, he received a PH. D. in Chemistry from Brown University in 1961.

Fluent in seven languages, his career first took him back to Brown where he worked in a research capacity with Dr. John Ross. In 1975 he and Dr. Ross moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they continued their research. He and Dr Ross co-authored the textbook Physical Chemistry, with two others in 1980. Eight years earlier he and William Riser co-authored another textbook, Problems for General and Environmental Chemistry.

In the early 1980s Mr. Flynn joined Cambridge Prepress Services, now of Everett Massachusetts and served that companys clients as a specialty proofreader until his death.

A science fiction buff his entire life, he was a member of the New England Science Fiction Association of Somerville, MA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Science Fiction Society of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served both organizations as an officer and an organizer of regional, national and international conventions.

He was an avid reader and moviegoer.

Mr. Flynn is survived by two brothers; John W. Jack Flynn of Warren RI and Thomas E. Flynn of Bristol RI. He leaves nieces; Kathleen Lawson of Oak Hill VA, Patricia Palmer of Bridgewater MA, Nicole Vlattas of Reston VA, Margaret Flynn of Somerville MA, Susan Flynn of Barrington RI and nephews; Michael Flynn of Poughkeepsie NY, Brian Flynn of White Plains NY, Thomas Flynn of Washington DC and John Flynn of Somerville, MA. He also leaves ten grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial will be private.
