George M. Foster, 84, of Bristol, RI, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. A son of the late Manuel and Leffie L. (Stone) Foster, and the longtime companion of Geraldine Sloat, George was a lifelong, proud Bristolian.
George proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper shortly after high school. He was overjoyed to be able to attend the Honor Flight to Washington, DC last September. George worked at the Newport Naval Base for many years, until his retirement. Although he had other professions over the years, his true passion was cars. George was an excellent mechanic and built a few of his own cars, including his beloved ’32 Ford Coupe and his grandson, Caleb’s, ’59 Chevy Apache and was known for his love of chrome exteriors. He could always be found frequenting all of the local car shows and cruise nights. George was also very involved in the Bristol Fire Department for over sixty years. During that time, he served as Deputy Chief for several years. He remained with Engine 10 and restored it to its former glory a few different times. In his leisure time, George also enjoyed meeting his Wednesday morning coffee crew. Most of all, George was a true family man and loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his beloved longtime companion, Geraldine Sloat, George is survived by his children, Cynthia Hoyt and her husband Marty of Swansea, MA, Lisa Foster-Pacheco and her husband Tyson of Bristol, RI, Christine Cabral and her husband Charlie of Riverside, RI, Kerri Sloat, Rob Sloat, and Josh Sloat; his sister, Barbara Fonseca and her husband Daniel of Bristol, RI; his grandchildren, Marissa, Cheyenne, Cassidy, Caleb, Morgan, Amber, Mark, Courtney, Jocelyn, Robbie, Avery and Gavin; and his great grandchildren, Graysen, Grant, Elijah, Florence, Indy and baby Luke on the way; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Foster.
Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, RI 02885, where the family will receive relatives and guests for Visitation on Sunday, January 18, 2026 from 1-5PM. I was able to help George on the old fire truck. Along side Lenny Francis at the corner of Roma an Magnolia st. Later we served together on the building committee for the new firestation on Metacom. Many times I would find him on Thompson Ave at the garage working on his cars, 1st the Chevy then the Ford. We often spoke about cars and family. He always had a smile and a Hey Marko for me. It was a privilege to have him for a friend. May God Bless you George and your family Mark S DaPonte Sr Happy Trails to You Until We Meet Again! " Roy Rogers "
