Obituary For Gil Moniz Da Ponte

Gil Moniz Da Ponte, 87, of Bristol, passed away at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, MA on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. He was married to Maria (Sousa) Da Ponte.

Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he emigrated to the United States in 1967 and settled in Bristol, RI where he lived for 59 years. He was the son of the late Augusto and Maria (Moniz) Da Ponte.

Gil was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Bristol for many years. He retired from his career as a Wire Cable Operator in 2004. Gil enjoyed hunting. He was also passionate about gardening, especially cultivating fig trees.

In addition to his wife Maria, Gil is survived by his children: Gil Da Ponte (Lynn Marie), Linda Leach (Alan), Stephen Da Ponte (Lori); his grandchildren: Lily, Alan, III, Albert; his sister: Maria Gloria Melo; and many extended relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements are through Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI 02885 where the family will receive condolences from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, July 17, 2026. His funeral will begin from Smith Funeral and Memorial Services at 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 18, 2026 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol, RI 02809. He will be laid to rest at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence, RI 02915.

    My name is Pat Aguiar, I purchased many beautiful hydrangeas from Mr. DaPonte back in 2017 . I actually tried contacting him today because I wanted to show him pictures of how beautiful they have grown. Phone number I had didn't work so did a search for him and found he had passed away. He was a very nice man and want the family to know how much enjoyment we have from his hydrangias. God bless you all and my deepest sympathy for your loss.
