Obituary For Joan R. Pattie
Joan R. (Wilkinson) Pattie, 94, of Barrington, RI died Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Newport Hospital.
She was the devoted and loving wife of Earl Pattie.
Joan was born in Attleboro. She was the daughter of the late Edith and Roland Wilkinson and sister to the late Doris Moody.
Joan wanted to share “the story of her dance life.” In her words…Joan started to dance when she was three years old and danced with her sister Doris. As they grew older they helped make their own costumes. They performed at the Loews State Theater, Providence Performing Arts, and Fayes Theater. They helped their dance students as they trained to be dance teachers. As she loved children and loved to dance, Joan opened her own dance studio in Providence in 1951 and then moved to Barrington opening a studio there in 1955, teaching tap, jazz, ballet and even line dancing. She was a dancing teacher for 58 years before she retired at age 80. She also taught her grandchildren and shared her love of dance with her great grandchildren.
Joan also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, tatting, and sewing. She looked forward to her yearly vacations in the Caribbean with her husband, summers at the beach house, and family events.
She is survived by her daughters Dianne Sampson (John) and Lori Mattson (Eric) and sons Steven Pattie (Dee) and Michael Pattie (Toni), all of Warren. She was a loving and devoted grandmother of 15 and great grandmother of 20.
Her funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to RI Save the Bay 100 Save the Bay Dr. Providence RI, 02905.

Miss Joan gave me the greatest gift of all...the love of dance. My best childhood years were spent a Saturdays with Dianne , Lori and Miss Marie. Miss Joan was gracious, kind, and most generous in her Providence studio, later when I opened my own studio, and even later when i retired. My heart is broken. Such a loss. My prayers to her loving family. R.I.P. Deborah (Soares) Bice.

My sister and I took dance lessons with Miss Joan in Barrington. It was a right in our neighborhood and her love of dance was always apparent. While I may not have been the most graceful dancer, she always encouraged me to do my best. Her energy made it fun. Sending lots of love to Miss Joan's family and friends.

Miss Joan introduced us to the world of dance at a very young age which created our love of dance to this day. She helped form a friendship between three little girls that has lasted nearly 60 years! We loved our classes, recitals, and trips to Boson for master classes with her. Miss Joan was always kind and patient and brought out the best in each of her students. We thank her for introducing us to Miss Marie who not only taught us to dance but has become a lifelong friend and mentor. We are grateful for being a part of Miss Joan's life and send our loving thoughts and prayers to her family - Lori Marolla DeSimeone, Linda DelConte Dionne, Pamela Foster Dandeneau

A DREAM COME TRUE AND PURE LOVE Family meant everything to my Mother as it does to me. She was very proud of all of us. Her great-grandchildren held an extremely important place in her heart. She was excited about her four generations. My Dad and her had enjoyable fun times babysitting their great-grandchildren while i worked a few hours. After he passed, they helped to fill her void and she was blessed with more four generations. Not many can live to say they had such an important part in helping to care for them. She had two pack 'n plays set up in her home for naps. So many hours of enjoyment playing hairdresser, gas station, covering her with scarfs she had knitted, instrumental marching parades, dominos, blocks so many towers, house and the list goes on and on. We all colored, did watercolor painting together and even took one of her sailboat paintings to top her 90th donut birthday cake. Her great-grandchildren were always very excited to give her their homemade cards. They loved to perform for her dancing, tumbling and singing. Her Christmas village was always a highlight along with the knitted Santa stockings she made for them. Also, our own fun games of chair ball and soccer. Our four generations story is one we will never forget. How lucky and blessed we all are having all the time we spent together. She was our Hero and will always be part of us and in our hearts for eternity. It was an Honor to call her Mother, Gram, and Grandma. She was the BEST! My Mother had a card on her bureau for close to twenty-five years we gave her. It read, "The love between a mother and child is a priceless treasure, growing more precious with each passing year. For a wonderful mother with love on your birthday." Love you forever and please say hi to Dad........ RIP - your loving daughter Dianne

To Joan's family, My daughter Alison started dancing with Joan at age 2 in September of 1987. Alison turned 3 that next month in October. I have videos of Miss Joan with my daughters dance class if anyone is the family would like to see them. Alison went on to dance way into her college years and won a national dance competition in NY, but she got her start with Miss Joan and I loved this lady very much. She was so good with the little girls. And demanded their attention. It's because of her that my daughter got to explore and develop her dance and later ice skating skills because of her start at 2 years old with Miss Joan in Barrington! I am so sorry for your loss.....Donna O'Malley....401-497-1931 ....in case you'd like to see those videos.
