Obituary For John Mattes

John A. Mattes, 69, of Bristol, passed unexpectedly on January 30, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of Nancy (Woodhead) Mattes with whom he shared 23 years.

Born in Pawtucket on February 09, 1955, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Vitullo) Mattes.

John cherished time spent with his family, his Old English Sheepdogs Gus and the late Quincy and restoring antique cars. He was certainly a car enthusiast. His true passion was restoring his antique cars, he would find a diamond in the rough, work his magic and bring back the car’s beauty. When he retired from 30+ years in the Transportation industry at CFS Logistics (Transportation Mgr.) and Overnight Transportation (Terminal Mgr.); he opened The Car Spa Inc. in Bristol, RI as owner operator for 20+ years. He enjoyed going to car shows with his antique cars, especially the VFW in Bristol on Monday nights.

He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, his favorite vacation spot was Florida, especially Disney and Mecum Auctions. Other travels included Alaska, Hawaii, Bermuda and he had plans to go to Italy in the spring. He enjoyed the Bristol 4th of July celebrations with family and friends. John stayed close with his high school friends and was always willing to help others when needed.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his children John N. Mattes and his wife Lisa of Warren and Nicole (Mattes) and her husband Matthew Bussiere of North Attleboro, MA. He was the best Papa to his 4 grandchildren, Logan, Abraham, Emily and Jacob, who he loved and adored.
