José Luis Lemos, 83, of Bristol passed away in Providence on Thursday, July 23, 2026. He was the husband of Maria (Ferreira) Lemos for 60 years before his passing.

Born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jaime and Conceição (Lemos) Lemos.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend whose life was defined by love, humility, and unwavering devotion to his family.

In 1974, Jose made a courageous journey to the United States alongside his beloved wife, Maria, and their young son, Jaime, in pursuit of a better life. With determination, sacrifice, and an extraordinary work ethic, he built a future rooted in stability and opportunity. Everything he achieved was guided by one purpose: to provide for and uplift the family he loved so deeply.

Jose was a man of quiet strength and remarkable generosity. He never turned away someone in need and was always ready to help without expecting anything in return. His kindness was not just something he showed it was who he was. To know Jose was to experience genuine compassion, humility, and a heart that gave freely and fully.

He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially in the kitchen. Cooking for his family and friends was one of his greatest joys, and his meals brought people together in laughter, conversation, and love. Around the table, Jose created not just food, but memories that will be treasured forever.

A passionate sports fan, Jose especially loved European soccer and rarely missed a match of his favorite teams. His enthusiasm for sports extended beyond soccer, as he enjoyed following and discussing many games throughout his life, always eager to share in the excitement and camaraderie they brought.

When he was not watching a game, Jose found peace outdoors. Whether fishing along the ocean, tending to his garden, or carefully maintaining his yard, he felt most at ease in nature. His beautifully kept home and garden were a reflection of his patience, pride, and dedication in everything he did.

Above all, Jose’s greatest pride was his family. The values he lived by—hard work, perseverance, kindness, and generosity—are the legacy he leaves behind. His love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the generations he helped shape.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

In addition to his wife Maria, José is survived by his son Jaime J. Lemos and his wife Laura A.; and his grandchildren: Justin D. Lemos, Madison A. Lemos, Sydney A. (Mateus) Canhoni, along with extended relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI 02885, where the family will receive condolences from 8:00 AM – 9:30AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. His funeral will begin from Smith Funeral & Memorial Services at 9:30 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 500 Metacom Avenue, Warren, RI 02885. He will be laid to rest at South Burial Ground, Sowamset Street, Warren, RI 02885.
