Obituary For Kyoung - Soon Wilcox

Kyoung-Soon “Kim” Wilcox, 91, of Tiverton, RI passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024 with her loving family by her side. A daughter of the late Kim Tae-Hoon and Park Jean-Sook and the beloved wife of the late Charles “Chuck” F. Wilcox, Kim grew up in South Korea during a tumultuous period in the country’s history. She was born when Korea was under Japanese occupation and in her teen years, during the Korean War, Kim and her family fled Seoul to relative safety in the southernmost part of Korea. The family returned to Seoul after the war and soon thereafter Kim travelled to the United States to attend D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY. It was there that she met Chuck. They married and continued to live in the area, primarily in Amherst and Williamsville, for close to 60 years before moving to New England to be close to their daughter.

Kim spent her early years raising her family and went on to work for the International Fellowship Student Exchange after her children began their college education. She then went on to start her own business, Abroad for Cultural Enrichment (ACE), with her late husband until their retirement. Kim was fluent in several languages, enjoyed continually learning new things, and had many hobbies including sewing, woodworking, stenciling, and cooking. She often made clothing for her family as well as for local fashion shows. In her younger years, she was a high school table tennis champion player. Kim had boundless energy and she and Charles loved to travel to the far east, around the United States, and around Europe. They especially loved Hawaii, where they had spent their honeymoon and to where they travelled many times. Kim had frequently travelled to South Korea with her late husband and, later in 2023, got to share a 3-week trip with her children. In her later years Kim enjoyed playing Scrabble and going out to lunch with her children.

Kim is survived by her son, Jeffrey Wilcox and his wife Leslie Marx of Durham, NC; her daughter, Terri Hughes and her husband Christopher of Bristol, RI; her sister, Hwang Kyoung-Soon of South Korea; and her 5 grandchildren, Erin Hughes, Katie Hughes, Xander Wilcox, Holly Wilcox and J.J. Wilcox. She was the sister of the late Kim Won-Shik, Kim Hyoung-Shik and Kim Yi-Shik.

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Rd. Warren, RI. Private family services will be at a later date.

Kim made lifelong friends at D’Youville College (now University) and it played an important part in her life.
