Obituary For Mary Mason Stephenson

Mary Mason Stephenson of Bristol, passed away on March 23, 2015 at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Ezra W. Mason and Elisabeth (Stevens) Mason. She was the sister of the late Henry S. Mason

She was the wife of the late William M. Stephenson.

She grew up in Bristol and in her youth she enjoyed horseback riding, lots of sailing and later on skiing. She learned to fence with some girlfriends and won two championships, placing a first and third. She enjoyed sailing on the Yankee Schooner for two separate week long trips with the Girl Scouts. She attended Katherine Gibbs School and after entered a contest for free flight training. She was among the only three girls to win and went on to obtain her pilots license. While on a solo flight she buzzed her parents house which her mother did not appreciate at all. Mary eventually moved to New York City and lived there for ten years with girlfriends. Her job with Bechtel Corp allowed her to travel to San Francisco and Canada while working. She enjoyed this job very much. In New York City she met and married William M. Stephenson. They moved to Norwalk Conn., where they build their home. In Conn., she worked for various lawyers and two private schools. At Thomas School she was the secretary to the head mistress, the infamous Jean Harris. After leaving Thomas School she worked as the registrar of St Lukes School where she stayed for many years, not retiring till the age of 78. She spent her later years back in her hometown of Bristol. Mary leaves two daughters, Elisabeth and Janet Stephenson of Bristol, three grandchildren, Sara Stephenson-Donley, Matthew (and his wife Kelly) Stephenson-Donley and Tyler Stephenson-Donley. She leaves one great grandchild Rene Collard. She will be sorely missed.

Dear Janet and family- I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She was such a special and interesting lady. I remember speaking about her so much, my mother wanted to meet her. Well, they met and since both were avid readers they began sharing books and occassionally having lunch together during your Mom's many weekend trips from CT to RI. Mary was a special lady, an absolute treasure and I will always remember her smile, hospitatlity, sense of self and light heartedness. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers- Paula

To Mary's family, I was not surprised to see that Mary lived to be 100. She was a wonderful lady and someone I enjoyed working for the years that I was with her. She was spunky, kind, funny and one of the sweetest Ladies I've had the privilege of working with. I've truly missed her. So sorry for your loss...
