Obituary For Michael J. Barbone

Michael J. Barbone (Mikey), 91, completed his journey of life as peacefully as he lived on April 5th, 2016 with a beloved family member by his side. Mike was born in Quincy, MA on April 27, 1924. He was the eldest son of Lorenzo and Maria (Ascoli) Barbone. Mike is survived by his loving family; his sister, Anne Barbone Colella, his brother Rudolph Barbone, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Singletary, Rafaela Heckmann and Lorenzo J. Barbone, Jr. After graduating high school, he joined the US Army on March 16, 1943. He was also a member of the greatest generation who answered the call for service to the United States. Mike, like so many WWII veterans, returned to civilian life without mentioning the details of his military experiences. It was only in his later years that his family and friends learned about his experience in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Germany and Central Europe. As the first line of artillery holding the Tec 5 special rank, on Tuesday, June 6th 1944, (Invasion of Normandy), he was one of many who participated in the largest seaborne invasion in history. Mike was awarded the Silver Service Star, the third-highest military decoration for valor and gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. He was decorated and cited with the Armys Good Conduct Medal, recognition of his service in European, African and Middle Eastern theaters of combat. Under the GI bill, he attended Bryant College and earned his bachelor degree in business. Mike was known for his abbondanza family meals, summer cookouts at Lidos beach, Fourth of July celebrations and every holiday. He enjoyed being a faithful fan of the Boston Red Sox. Mike will always be remembered for his gentle heart and generosity to his family and friends. As a family, we wish to thank the excellent and outstanding staff at Hallworth House and Hospice of Rhode Island. In keeping with his wishes and privacy and modesty of his life, a memorial service will be a private family affair, scheduled at a later date. Mikey (Uncle Mike) will live in our grateful hearts forever.
