Obituary For Norman J. Urban, Jr.

Norman J. Urban, Jr., 70, of Warren passed away peacefully in Providence on Sunday, August 23, 2026 surrounded by his family.

Norman was the son of the late Norman and Angelina (Phillips) Urban.

Norman spent most of his life in Warren, RI where he built his home and raised his son. Norman received his certification from Rhode Island School of Electronics in 1977 and went on to work as a driver for the Rhode Island Veterans Home for over 29 years until his retirement.

Norman was an avid softball player growing up and won multiple championships in Warren. When his son started playing sports he was a constant presence on the sidelines, never missing a game. In his later years he loved shopping and golfing with his son and spoiling his grandson. As a die-hard New England sports fan and collector, he took real pride in hunting down the best deals, especially when finding unique items for the people he loved. Norman could fix just about anything and he was always ready to lend a hand for his friends and family. Whether he was singing karaoke, enjoying a Black Russian, or simply sharing a story, Norman brought his big personality into every room he entered.

Norman is survived by his son: Eric J. Urban and his wife Lynsey Urban; his grandson: Wesley Norman Urban; his sisters: Elizabeth Gallinelli, Anne Czerwinski (Ernie), and Mary Rabideau; his sister-in-law: Sue; and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Norman and Angelina; and his brothers: Walter, Vincent, and John Urban.

Funeral arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI where the family will receive family and friends on Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Condolences

My condolences to Norman's family. I met Norman in the late 1970s when we both worked at the R.I. Veterans Home. We would cross paths again a number of years later when I was working at the VA Medical Center in Providence where Norman was a daily presence bringing Veterans in for their clinic appointments. Norman always had some funny story to share that left me laughing long after he departed the medical center. RIP friend, and thank you for the many years you served our Veterans with kindness and respect.

I grew up with Norman and what I remember most was his ability to always bring smiles to everyone around him regardless of where we were or what we were doing. We hadn't seen each other in many years, but just thinking of him still brings that smile back for me. Rest easy, my old friend. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

To the Urban Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Although I do not know Norman that well, I did and do know his son Eric who was a phenomenal friend to me during my high school years. Anyone who can raise a son like Eric, deserves a special place in heaven. He will be missed. I know Eric was very proud of him! -Brennen

I met Norm over years ago as our sons were friends and still are today. It was always fun to see him or run into him at the grocery store or CVS. He was always smiling and funny with great stories. You always left his presence on a good mood. He will definitely be entertaining to those he encounters in Heaven. God Bless his family at this time. Melanie and Tim Petit
